Ashan, who is Chair of the London Youth Assembly, is passionate about making a positive change to the lives of young people, particularly those who are disadvantaged.
He has served his local community as a longstanding member of Hounslow’s Youth Council, and as a Cabinet Member for Knife Crime and Safety, working with councillors, public figures, MPs, the MET, and Police Commissioners, to try and tackle the issue of Knife Crime and Anti- Social Behaviour within his community of Hounslow.
In April 2023, Ashan was elected to represent Hounslow across London and nationally. Over the last year, in office, he has worked tirelessly to make Hounslow a better place to live for young people, holding regular meetings with members of the local police force to help improve policing methods in West London, tackle antisocial behaviour, and raise awareness about Stop and Search.
He has held public surgeries to hear young people’s views and ideas whilst creating dialogue with MPs, councillors, local authorities, and the Mayor of London to bring change. Through his work with the Hounslow Youth Council to raise awareness and educate young people about the use and impact of knife-crime, the Borough reported a 26% decrease in knife crime.
In May 2024, he was unanimously elected as the new Chair of the London Youth Assembly (LYA) and is working with Member to reform the organisation and develop a positive action plan for its future. Determined to make a difference to children affected by poverty and children who have fled domestic abuse and are living in refuges in London, he started a fundraising campaign with the London Youth Assembly, called ‘Reaching for the Stars,’ with an aim to provide some of the City’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged children, with a “Fun, carefree day out.”
